Experiment: Printing the Canadian Imagination

This exhibition showcases highlights from the David McKnight Canadian Little Magazine and Small Press Collection, including Canadian little magazines, small press and micro-press imprints, and a complementary research archive.

It is featured in an article by Sierra Bilton entitled "A Century of Subculture" in VUE WEEKLY (9 May 2018) and in a special essay by David McKnight that marks the 25th anniversary of Rob McLennan's small press: "above/ground press: A Collector's Odyssey" (15 June 2018).

David McKnight has considerable experience, passion, and knowledge as a collector and as a librarian, and he spent 30 years developing this extraordinary collection, which includes P.K. Page's copy of Preview, John Sutherland's run of First Statement, Allan Ginsberg's copies of TISH, and a nearly complete collection of the 1,500 Coach House Press imprints.

With the exception of a two-week closure (June 11-22) for the installation of a storage system for some specialized materials, the exhibition runs April 27 to August 24, 2018.

The exhibition catalogue will be available for use in the library or for purchase at the Peel library ($40), and will soon be available through University of Alberta Press and online book retailers.

Bruce Peel Special Collections is open to researchers and visitors year around, Monday-Friday from 12:00-4:30pm. (Exception: June 11-22, 2018)
